FAQ

  • What does a session look like?

All sessions are conducted over Zoom. Sessions are 55 minutes long and begin with a fun, connective activity. Some families prefer to have their child’s homework serve as the foundation for the session, while others have fully customized lessons based on goals established with the family. Each session ends with a game or close out activity.

  • What age students do you work with?

The majority of my students are upper elementary school, middle school, and high school students. Familes especially find my services helpful in the lead up to the transition to middle school as well as to prepare their students for the harder academic load of high school.

  • What subjects do you teach?

For elementary and middle school students, I am a one-stop shop: Math, Reading foundations & comprehension, Spelling & Grammar, Writing, History and Science.

For high school students, I specialize in History and English, particularly with an emphasis on research skills, essay writing, and comprehension strategies for accessing more challenging texts.

  • Do you work with students that need extra academic help?

Absolutely! Especially since the pandemic, there are so many learners that have experienced gaps in their education. I am able to individually assess each student to identify where their gaps are and plan engaging, hands-on opportunities that help them build the key content and strategies needed as they move forward in their academic career. I am also able to help support the family in advocating for their child’s needs within the school context.

  • Do you work with students who identify as gifted?

Absolutely! Gifted learners face unique challenges in the classroom as they struggle to stay engaged and challenged. I am able to use problem based learning to present students with challenges and opportunities for growth not typically available to them. I am also able to support them by teaching them more advanced strategies so that they can continue to challenge themselves within the classroom. Additionally, I can help students prepare for the CogAT test.

  • How do I know what my child works on with you?

At the end of every session package, I send a detailed report that summarizes my key learnings with your child. Every 5-10 sessions (depending on you, package), you get a snapshot of your child’s development with recommendations of ways you can continue to support this work at home. Additionally, I consider myself a part of your learner’s support team. I am available by phone or text to be a consistent thought partner.

  • How do you view Social-Emotional Learning?

We are humans first. There are times when Social-Emotional needs take center stage before the academic can come into play. For example, some students are math adverse because they are reluctant to make a mistake. I work with learners on feelings of perfectionism, insecurity, and other common emotions that arise during the vulnerable work of learning and the difficulties of being a student.

  • How do you view Critical Thinking?

To me, critical thinking isn’t a set list of strategies that kids can memorize and check off, but rather the process of internalizing a multitude of ways of thinking creatively, divergently, and freely. Critical Thinking should feel fun to the learner as they learn to stretch their own mental power and realize that they have the ability to trust themselves. Critical Thinking helps learners recognize the answers within themselves.

  • Do you tutor adults?

This is usually asked somewhat facetiously after a consultation, but YES! I kind of do. I offer parenting coaching which is designed to work with the adult to help tackle a specific challenge you are facing in your parenting practice. These are usually short-term commitments that help you isolate one goal that you would like to work on for yourself or an area you would like to better support your learner.
